Our Teaching Approach
In 2008 the school adopted the phonics based reading and writing program Read Write Inc. (RWI) as the core component of our English Curriculum. The strength of this program lies in its explicit, systematic teaching of phonics and the 44 sounds of the English language, supported by appropriate reading materials. In addition to the RWI, we have also developed comprehensive school based module booklets in each year level to cover vocabulary building, grammar and usage. We believe in a holistic approach to second language acquisition. All learning modules contain a range of creative activities to ensure students have the opportunity to use what they learn in a practical way. We have a strong emphasis on building oral skills and all students from P1-P6 participate in programmed speaking activities designed to build confidence to speak English in real life situations.
Native English Teacher (NET) Programs
The NET co-teaches with local English teachers and works with every student from P1-P6 during the year. The lessons vary for each year level and focus on different aspects of English Language development.
In P1, we encourage participation and enjoyment of English through songs, speaking games and shared stories.
In addition, P1-2 work in groups with puppets to integrate reading and speaking skills.
In P2-4, we introduce the Guided Reading Program. Students read with a teacher in a small group and practice phonics and reading skills. The students also use iPads to review vocabulary, grammar and spelling and work independently on graded reading comprehension exercises.
In P3-6, the NET program incorporates coding projects to enhance STEM education
In P5 and P6, students work on integrated modules with an integration of technology to produce a final written product (P5). In P6, students practise their interviewing skills, as well as integrating a group project to further refine their research, organizational and collaborative skills which are necessary for secondary school, where self-learning skills are reinforced (P6).
English outside the Curriculum - activities
To further increase students’ exposure to English, we arrange various activities outside the curriculum. This extra-curricular program includes English Talent Shows, English Speaking Days, regular morning assemblies and daily announcements in English, Radio and TV broadcasts created by students, corridor games, recess play in the English room and Maths/Science booths in English during whole school special subject days.
